Why planes are big

I never really thought it made a difference whether the plane was big or small before. Now I've realized it really is a continuom between a tin can and a jumbo jet. Small plane - more like tin can in the wind. I'm done with small planes. Why would any one want to fly themselves on these tiny jets?
